Introduction Big data analytics is a valuable tool for improving governance and decision-making in the public sector. However, its complexity and misconceptions about its scope often confuse government professionals. This three-day workshop aims to clarify big data concepts and explore practical applications in areas like financial planning, health, urban planning, and security, coupled with addressing challenges such as ethics, policy, and leadership in implementing analytics solutions.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants would be able to: explain key concepts like information, big data, business analytics, data science, analytics tools, types of data files, dirty data, structured data, and unstructured data.
- Identify examples of problems that can be solved by using big data analytics in their respective government functions.
- Identify analytic methods useful for public functions like budgeting, evaluation, health, education, land use, transport, revenue, social welfare, security and emergency response.
- Identify possible use of analytics techniques like A/B testing, sentiment analysis, cluster analysis, classification, regression, and natural language processing.
- Identify appropriate use of visualization tools like heat map, leaflet map, dashboard demonstrate use of common analytics tools like Excel, R and Python using their laptops.
- list critical issues that can prevent successful application of big data analytics and how to solve them.

- Officers in charge of gathering, analyzing, reporting and using data for government functions like budgeting, evaluation, health, education, land use, transport, revenue, social welfare, security and emergency response.
